TICKS IN ALBERTA
Every neighbourhood in central Alberta has reported ticks--they are not just in tall grass areas. The distribution is random because the ticks drop off of migratory birds. The ticks are wintering in Alberta, and absolutely can be seen any time above 4 Celcius. Calgary has reported ticks in February.
If anyone in Central Alberta finds a tick, please submit it to Johnstone Crossing Health Clinic in Red Deer, your physician's office, or any veterinary facility. Add a small piece of cotton or paper towel moistened with water to avoid drying it out.
The American Dog Tick doesn't carry Lyme disease; so people from Saskatchewan and Manitoba who are very familiar with ticks have not been concerned with Lyme disease risk. Moose Ticks in Alberta and Rocky Mountain Wood Ticks do not carry Lyme disease. Saskatchewan and Manitoba have not had tick surveillance programs until very recently; so we do not know how many of the ticks in these provinces are the species that can carry Lyme disease.
The ticks responsible for Lyme disease have been found throughout Alberta, including northern Alberta. Tick prevention medicine for your pet should be purchased from a knowledgeable veterinary clinic. Not all tick products are created equally or have long lasting protection.
Ticks can be as small as a poppyseed. Can you spot the 5 ticks on the picture above. Ticks are known to spread diseases such as Lyme Disease. If you find a Tick on your pet, don't throw it away. Bring it into the clinic and we can send it away for free testing.
